Martin Venezky
Martin Venezky is the mastermind behind Appetite Engineers, a small, internationally recognized design firm. His interest in intricacy, complexity, ornament and handwork has caused many wary employees to nervously inch their way toward the exit. But before taking flight, they have helped him create some wonderfully entertaining work for the Sundance Film Festival, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, Chronicle Books, Princeton Architectural Press, and Blue Note Records, among others. Martin Venezky's work has been featured in Eye, How, émigré and Graphis.

How lucky one would be to have this intelligent and sensitive man as a teacher. Martin speaks to experimentation and innovation in his work, and he has lived his life true to this philosophy. Martin is the playful inventor, and had he stayed in mathematics I have no doubt he would have broken new ground there while inspiring students to take the path less traveled. This was a wonderful interview. It is the Martin I am so fortunate to know.
Terrific interview. Martin designed all three of my books: Snapshot Chronicles:Inventing The American Photo Album, Around The World: The Grand Tour in Photo Albums and Finding Frida Kahlo. I cannot say enough good things about his work and the process of connecting content and design. Martin's ability to use design (as he says in the interview) "to bring the old & new together to create something that comes alive" is unparalleled.
I really enjoyed this inspiring interview. I would share the similar experience : my mother was pushing me to get into arts and drawing classes ,but I did not listen to her at that time and earned a degree in accounting. NOW, I realized my interest in more into designing and trying to get into MFA in graphic design program. (hats off to my Mom;).

I wish there were more people like Martin Venezky teaching at SVA. Graphic Design is art first, business second. School teaches us to meet deadlines and fulfill client demands, but so little emphasis is placed on design process and experimentation. Martin expels the concepts of fear and hesitation in design. He is one of few who proves that an artistic, experimental, and intuitive approach to design can still communicate effectively and have mass commercial appeal.
